Story | Energy infrastructure

When hydrogen meets 1,000 bar, execution matters.

How do you install a first-of-its-kind hydrogen refuelling station when every high-pressure connection must be flawless?

The story

For companies operating critical energy infrastructure, hydrogen is not only a future technology. It is becoming a real infrastructure challenge — one that requires proven execution capability, strong technical discipline, and trust in the team performing the work.

The client, a public energy utility operating in the field of critical energy infrastructure, needed the mechanical installation of a hydrogen refuelling station. Since this was a first-of-its-kind project on the Slovenian market, relevant local experience with this type of hydrogen refuelling infrastructure was limited. The client therefore needed a partner with a strong track record in technical gases and natural gas systems, as well as the ability to execute demanding piping works safely and reliably.

The technical challenge was significant. Hydrogen is a demanding medium, and the operating pressures in the piping systems of the refuelling station reach up to 1,000 bar. At such pressures, the quality of every piping connection matters. There is no room for weak execution, poor workmanship, or unclear responsibility.

This is where in-house skilled labour makes the difference. High-pressure hydrogen piping requires more than installation capacity — it requires experienced fitters, precise workmanship, disciplined execution, and a culture in which every connection is treated as critical. For this type of work, flawless craftsmanship is not a slogan. It is a safety requirement.

For IMP Promont, this was also the first project involving this type of high-pressure hydrogen installation. However, our previous experience with technical gases, natural gas systems, demanding industrial piping, and pressure equipment provided a strong foundation. The application was new, but the discipline was familiar.

The installation was successfully completed on the first attempt. Pressure and strength tests were carried out at pressures up to 1,100 bar, confirming the quality of the installation and the reliability of the high-pressure piping connections. For a project of this kind, this was the most important result: the connections held, the system was ready for operation, and the client received a technically demanding hydrogen installation executed with confidence.

This is how we work: precise, responsible, and future-oriented. With our approach, we help clients deliver on their decarbonisation promises by removing bottlenecks on the implementation side. Hydrogen infrastructure requires more than vision — it requires companies that can turn that vision into installed, tested, and operational systems.

The challenges

  • First-of-its-kind project
  • Hydrogen piping up to 1,000 bar
  • Pressure testing up to 1,100 bar
  • Demanding hydrogen medium

Our solutions

  • Complete mechanical installation
  • High-pressure hydrogen piping execution
  • Integration of key station equipment
  • Full EN 13480 compliance

Lessons learned

Hydrogen infrastructure becomes real only when vision is matched with precise, tested, and reliable execution.

Client impact

The client received Slovenia’s first hydrogen refuelling station of this kind, operating reliably and confirming IMP Promont’s capability to deliver complex hydrogen infrastructure successfully from the first execution.
